Workshop Topics
Unpacking the new Digital Technology Curriculum in the Language Classroom
In this 2-hour workshop you will:

learn and explore the implications the new Digital Technology Curriculum has for language teachers from Years 0-10

discuss ‘computational thinking’ and how it can be used in a language classroom
-
learn how to incorporate computer programming in the language classroom, using programmes such as Scratch or Minecraft
Resource Making for Languages - Years 7-10
In this 2-hour workshop you will:
- discuss what makes a good language learning resource and why

explore different types of language learning resources
-
identify opportunities for adaptation, development and collaboration of resources
Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) for Beginner Students - Years 7-10
In this 2-hour workshop you will:
- discuss the Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach in relation to the Learning Languages curriculum in the New Zealand Curriculum

experience TBLT from the student perspective, using communicative tasks that suit beginner students in Years 7-10
- get hands-on experience of generating 1 or 2 communicative tasks using the resources provided
Developing Intercultural Communicative Competency through Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach for Beginner Students - Years 7-10
In this 2-hour workshop you will:

review the key elements of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and the intercultural communicative language teaching (iCLT) principles, in relation to the NZ Learning Languages curriculum

explore and experience different types of intercultural communicative tasks designed for beginner students in Years 7-10

discuss possible ideas for adaption and/or development as well as opportunities for collaboration
Generating Communicative Tasks from a topic for Beginner Students - Years 7-10
In this 2-hour workshop you will:
- review the key elements of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT)

explore 6 different types of communicative tasks

produce 6 different types of communicative tasks on some commonly covered topics for beginner students in Years 7-10
Intercultural Communicative Language Teaching (iCLT) for Beginner Students - Years 7-10
In this 2-hour workshop you will:
- review the intercultural communicative language teaching (iCLT) principles

explore some practical ways of incorporating language and culture for beginner students in Years 7-10

discuss possible ideas for adaption and/or development as well as opportunities for collaboration
Intercultural Communicative Language Teaching (iCLT) and the Treaty of Waitangi

In this workshop you will:

deepen your understanding of the intercultural communicative language teaching (iCLT) principles

explore some practical ways of incorporating language and culture, with special focus on the Treaty of Waitangi

discuss and share ideas in relation to the bi-cultural partnership of Aotearoa, and our responsibility to NZ society

Explore: How to increase the repertoire of formulaic expressions in your classroom (How do you say...?) 1.5hour
The aim of this EXPLORE workshop is for teachers to:

understand how to increase the repertoire of formulaic expressions

learn a second language while communicating using targeted expressions to facilitate communication
Explore: What is a task? 1hour
The aim of this EXPLORE workshop is for teachers to:

understand what is in a language lesson

identify the criteria for a task in a language lesson

explore types of tasks in a language lesson
Learning Languages for Beginner Students in Years 7-10
In this 2-hour workshop you will:
- review the key expectations of the Learning Languages curriculum in the New Zealand Curriculum for beginner students in Years 7-10 in an interactive way

explore effective ways of meeting the curriculum expectations by engaging in hands-on communicative tasks
-
discuss strategies to make language learning fun, motivating, achievable, continuous and sustainable for learners in Years 7-10
Cultures in Language Classrooms for Beginner Students in Years 7-10
In this 2-hour workshop you will:
- discuss cultural similarities and differences between China, Japan and Korea
-
explore the different types of chopsticks of China, Japan and Korea as well as the cultural background behind them
-
practice some classroom activities and discuss how to incorporate more target language to enable beginner students in Years 7-10 to be more interculturally competent
French Immersion weaving workshop 3 hours
The aim of this EXPLORE workshop is for teachers to:
- create a project in a French immersion situation following Maori protocols and using NZ natural resources

explore and experience some practical ways of incorporating second language acquisition principles with language and culture
-
discuss possible ideas for adaption and/or development as well as opportunities for cross-curricular lessons
Weaving workshop 3 hours
The aim of this EXPLORE workshop is for teachers to:
- create a small project following Maori protocols and using NZ natural resources

explore and experience some practical ways of incorporating second language acquisition principles with language and culture
-
discuss possible ideas for adaption and/or development as well as opportunities for cross-curricular lessons
